Here are 5 quick tips to help you hone your Instagram networking skills.
Whether you are a singer, a producer, a rapper, or a guitarist, these tips will guide you in the intricate craft of networking in the music industry.
1) Prepare yourself in advance
Imagine if someone hits you up wanting to collab, and when you check him out you can only see 5 shitty pictures, a meaningless bio, and a link to his 2 years old bootleg/beat… Would you wanna work with him?
Being an artist, I completely get it: making music is hard even by itself! But if you want to be taken seriously, you need to treat your Instagram page as your business card.
I’m not saying you must have a killer insta, but it must be as professional-looking as you can manage. A clean and well-executed page shows you understand the importance of social media for an artists career, and that you probably already have some sort of plan to build your own career.
2) Never look for short-term success
What would you do if, while going to work, some dude approached you and started asking right away to check out his IG profile? Would you listen to him, or keep walking?
You’d think Instagram networking would be different, but it isn’t! If you start a conversation with someone by spamming your track, chances are theyll simply ignore you.
Instead, you should start thinking long-term and developing relationships.
3) Offer value
Everyone has something going on in their life, and your goal must be to help them with their vision. In turn, they’ll be grateful for your contribution, and they’ll be much more willing to help you!
So, ask yourself what you could do for them.
For example, if you are skilled enough in photo/video editing, you could offer to create some content for their Insta. Or you could simply give them a couple of content ideas, and share a cool website they may find useful.
4) If all else fails
Can’t do any of those? Don’t worry, just be present and support them however you can. Be active on their socials: like, comment and generally, interact with them. Basically, show some love!
Trust me, when in 2 months you’ll dm them, they’ll remember you, and this time they’ll be much more likely to really listen to you!
5) Have the right attitude
I often hear stories of some dude who thinks he’s entitled to have everyone’s attention, and that his time is more valuable than everyone else’s. Well… IT ISN’T!
When contacting someone, always be respectful of their time, and conclude by saying thanks!
A well written and polite message may be the difference between them ignoring you, and them listening to what you have to say.
